Massage can be an effective treatment for headaches and migraine. It can reduce the frequency and severity of attacks. Migraines are a complex condition and there are not always clear triggers but some include tiredness, dehydration, poor posture, neck, shoulder tension, poor sleep quality, low blood sugar level, stress and hormonal changes.

Massage promotes circulation and blood flow, decreases pain from trigger points, relieves muscle tension which helps muscle balance and neck alignment. Massage will relax the muscles that attach to the base of the scull, this can help tension headaches that travel up the back of the head into the eye.

A lot of people don’t know what causes their headaches and don’t think of massage for help.

The suboccipital muscles are a common cause for headaches. These are based at the back of your skull and work in balance with your jaw. They help to keep your head balanced on top of your spine.

Trigger points in the suboccipital muscles can cause tension, migraine and cluster headaches.

Massage will also help to regulate certain hormones and reduce cortisol. Increase endorphin release promoting relaxation and improved sleep quality.

My treatment consists mainly of massage to the thoracic back, shoulders, upper pectoral muscle, sub occipital muscles, neck, head and face.

Does Sports Massage Hurt?

Muscles are designed to move, to be in constant motion, stretched and contracted, Most people spend their time constantly contracting them at the gym so they become shortened or spend  time sat in the same position all day, which over time this shortening of the muscles makes them become tight, reducing the blood flow causing more tightness.

When you get treatment for your muscles, the ones that are short and tight will not move under your therapists touch, which then can cause you pain. If your muscles are relaxed and supple then a sports massage will not be painful.

Everyone is different, pressure that is comfortable for one person can cause pain to someone else, Your in charge of how much pressure is applied to your muscles, I constantly ask clients for feedback and am respectful and attentive to how much pressure can be tolerated.

Sports massage is not just about getting deep into muscle and tissue but sometimes to bring about the desired effect, healing and recuperation, skillful pressure is applied to bring about this change.
