massage-389716_640Swedish massage is based on the Western concepts of anatomy and physiology, as opposed to energy work on “meridians ” or sen lines in Asian massage systems. By far, the most popular benefit of Swedish Massage is that it is both relaxing and invigorating. It is an excellent way to help rid the body of tension and to achieve a sense of overall well-being.

Massage has existed since around 3000 BC when the Chinese recognised its benefits. They found that applying pressure techniques was very effective on specific parts of the body.

Swedish body massage emerged in Europe in the early 1800s. There are differences in opinion on how Swedish massage was developed and how it got its name. by 1890 a number of physicians and non-physicians had published books describing in detail with text and illustrations the massage movements we now know as Swedish Massage.

Swedish massage is the most well-known and common massage used in the West. A relaxing massage that uses a variety of light strokes and techniques including effleurage, petrissage, vibrations, rotation, friction, rolling and Tapotment. These techniques are applied in the direction of the heart called “ The Venus Return” which is in the direction of circulation, This warms the surface of the body by promoting circulation and delivering fresh oxygen and nutrients to the muscle tissue.

Swedish massage allows the body to absorb more oxygen, which can rejuvenate the body.  It is thought to aid detoxification by increasing the speed by which body eliminates waste.
